Frans de Waal was a Dutch American primatologist and ethologist. He studied the chimpanzee colony at Arnhem Zoo and later worked for decades at Emory University and the Yerkes National Primate Research Center. His books on the social lives of apes brought research on empathy, reconciliation and animal intelligence to a wide audience.
